One of the fundamental challenges facing Christianity today, is that  we’ve become sort of a culture of talkers rather than doers and demonstrators. We’ve become theorists and conversationalists, more than people who are actually doing the gospel. 

James exhorts us to not just be “hearers of the word” but be “doers of the word.” This scripture in James was addressing a Greek minded culture that would gather in the amphitheatre to listen to a word that tickled the ears. These same people would go out from the lecture with no practical strategy to apply what they heard. Does that sound familiar? 

In fact, a deep dive into the original Greek of “be doers of the word, and not hearers only…” (James 1:22), meant something similar to “auditing a course, but not getting credit or diploma.” 

The reality is if you want to DO the word, “the word must become flesh” in you. I encourage people to listen to a sermon 4 to 7 times if they really want to live it out. Meditate on that word until it becomes flesh and begins to demonstrate through your life.
