WHEN PROPHECY BECOMES PERFORMANCE: REDISCOVERING THE TRUE HEART OF GOD'S VOICE
There's a profound difference between hearing God speak to you and needing the world to know you heard God speak. In our age of instant connectivity and digital validation, this distinction has become increasingly blurred, and the consequences are reshaping how we understand prophetic ministry in the church today.
The Reboring of a Sacred Gift
Imagine a beautiful wooden instrument that has been played for years. Over time, the wood begins to warp, and the sound that once rang true now comes out slightly off-key. The instrument hasn't lost its value, but it needs restoration. Craftsmen call this process "reboring," a careful treatment that resets the instrument to produce true sound once again.
Something similar is happening in prophetic ministry today. What was meant to be a pure channel for God's voice has, in many places, become warped by our culture's obsession with platform, validation, and spectacle. The good news? God is in the business of restoration. He's reboring this gift, and while the process may feel uncomfortable, even embarrassing at times, what emerges will be the same but different: retuned, restored, and ready for a new era.
The Ninety Percent Rule
Here's a truth that might surprise you: approximately ninety percent of what you hear from God in prophecy is meant for you and no one else.
Let that sink in for a moment.
The Creator of the universe, who holds galaxies in His hands, takes time to speak directly to you. That's not a consolation prize, it's the ultimate compliment. God loves you so much that He downloads His thoughts, His heart, His perspective directly into your spirit. These moments aren't meant for Instagram stories or Facebook posts. They're intimate conversations between you and your Father.
The challenge arises when we confuse this personal communication with a public mandate. When the first thought after receiving a word from God is "Which social media platform should I use?" rather than "Lord, is this just for me?", we've revealed something about our hearts. Perhaps a need for validation. Maybe an unhealed rejection wound. Or simply an impatience with the often-difficult journey of prophetic maturity.
The Dark Night of the Soul
There's a reason seasoned prophetic voices carry such weight and authority. They've walked through what spiritual writers call "the dark night of the soul", a season (sometimes lasting years or even decades) of being rejected, discounted, and ignored by others.
This isn't punishment; it's preparation. Unless we journey through this spiritual wilderness, our capacity to carry weighty words from God remains limited. The dark night strips away our need for human approval and teaches us to find our validation solely in God's pleasure. It transforms us from people who speak because we need to be heard into vessels who speak because they've truly heard from God.
Social media, with its instant feedback loops and dopamine hits from likes and shares, offers a seductive shortcut around this necessary process. But there are no shortcuts in the kingdom. The very thing that makes us feel validated, immediate public response, can actually stunt our growth in the gift God has given us.
From Commentators of Babylon to Heralds of the Kingdom
When prophetic voices become more interested in predicting world events than helping the body of Christ understand where they stand in relation to Jesus, something fundamental has shifted. We've moved from being heralds of the kingdom to mere commentators on Babylon.
Yes, there's precedent for prophets speaking into national and geopolitical matters. But when this becomes our preoccupation, when the measure of a prophet's credibility rests on whether they correctly predicted an election outcome or a global event, we've lost the plot entirely.
The book of Revelation gives us a stunning picture of true prophetic ministry. John, the beloved disciple who leaned on Jesus's breast, found himself so overwhelmed by a prophetic vision that he fell down to worship an angel. The angel quickly stopped him, saying essentially, "Don't do that! The spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus."
In that moment of pure prophetic encounter, John forgot he wasn't standing before Jesus Himself. That's the high-water mark of prophetic ministry: when the word is so saturated with Christ's presence that people feel Jesus in their midst. Not impressive predictions about presidents or pandemics, but an encounter with the living God.
The Power of Protocol
In our individualistic culture, the word "protocol" can sound restrictive, even controlling. But biblical protocol isn't about power plays or gatekeeping... it's about protection, maturity, and effectiveness.
Before a prophetic word goes public, several questions need to be asked: Is this for me personally? If not, is it for a friend or small group? If it has broader application, does it belong to the covenant community I'm in relationship with? Have I submitted it to recognized leadership? Am I walking in authorized channels?
These aren't hoops to jump through; they're guardrails that keep us from careening off cliffs. A prophetic word given by an unknown voice through an unauthorized channel carries no weight, regardless of how accurate it might be. God entrusts His words to people who understand and honor the structures He's established.
Accuracy Isn't Everything
Here's a potentially controversial statement: It's better to have someone give an inaccurate word with the right heart and submission to proper protocol than to have someone occasionally nail a prediction while refusing all accountability.
This isn't advocating carelessness or "guessing" in the prophetic. Rather, it's acknowledging that we're clay vessels. The moment prophecy leaves God's throne and touches our ears, it's already filtered through our humanity. We should pursue accuracy, yes, but not at the expense of humility, accountability, and growth.
If accuracy alone determined prophetic purity, some psychics would rank higher than genuine prophets. We must discern the source, not just evaluate the outcome.
The Prophetic That Changes Lives
The most powerful prophetic ministry often happens in the everyday moments we overlook. A word of encouragement to a coworker. A moment of insight that brings hope to a struggling friend. A simple touch and a few sentences that lead someone into the arms of Jesus.
While we're busy trying to predict who the next president will be, there are people all around us, at our workplace, in our neighborhood, at the grocery store, who desperately need an encounter with the testimony of Jesus. That president we prophesied about might leave office in four years, requiring us to start the prediction cycle all over again. But the person who meets Jesus through a simple prophetic word of encouragement? That's an eternal impact.
Moving Forward
The prophetic gift isn't dying; it's being refined. God is calling us back to the heart of prophetic ministry: pointing people to Jesus, helping the church understand where she stands in relation to her covenant with God, and creating space for divine encounters that transform lives.
This season of reboring might feel uncomfortable. Some dysfunction needs to be acknowledged. Some practices need to change. But on the other side of this process, we'll discover a prophetic expression that's both ancient and fresh, rooted in biblical truth yet perfectly suited for the unique challenges of our time.
The question isn't whether God is still speaking. He absolutely is. The question is whether we're willing to lay down our need for platform and validation long enough to truly hear what He's saying, and to whom He's saying it.
